Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms: controversial issues.

Low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms can spread to the peritoneum as pseudomyxoma peritonei even though they are not obviously invasive in the appendix. During the past several decades, several problematic issues surrounding this enigmatic tumor have been debated in the literature, including appropriate nomenclature for the appendiceal tumors and their peritoneal metastases. Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm and endometriosis of the appendix

BACKGROUND A distended, mucous-filled appendix is known as an appendiceal mucocele. They are a rare form of an appendiceal mass and develop from both benign and malignant processes. Mucoceles can develop secondarily to an obstruction, such as from a fecalith, scarring or, rarely, endometriosis. Only 12 cases of non-neoplastic appendiceal mucoceles caused by endometriosis have been previously de...

An incidental discovery of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm.

A 65-year-old man with a history of hyperplastic polyps underwent a surveillance colonoscopy, which revealed a large, smooth cystic bulge at the appendicular orifice (Figure 1). Subsequently, a computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen with contrast revealed an appendiceal mucocele measuring 13.3 x 4.5 cm (Figures 2a and 2b). Because of the abnormal imaging findings, an elective laparoscopic appe...

Dysplastic intestinal-type metaplasia of appendiceal endometriosis: a mimic of low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm

UNLABELLED We report an example of dysplastic intestinal-type metaplasia involving endometriosis of the appendix in a 45 year old woman. One other example of this phenomenon has been reported. As it occurs within the muscular wall of the appendix, confusion with low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) may occur. Evidence supporting the metaplastic nature of the intestinal epithelium is o...

Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm Presenting as an Adnexal Mass

Appendiceal tumors are rare, late diagnosed neoplasms that may not be differentiated from adnexal masses even by advanced imaging methods and other diagnostic procedures. They may be asymptomatic and remain undiagnosed until surgery. We report a case of an 80-year-old postmenopausal woman presenting with a pelvic mass and a history of weight loss. The patient underwent laparotomy which revealed...
